Storeaway Overview
Background
The Storeaway project was one of my earliest forays into using HTML. It was done in 1997 with only a one week HTML class under my belt. As such, it left much to be desired.
There are a couple of things that at the time I was overly proud of. This project contains my first attempts at a watermarked background. I was also able to gain experience with some shareware graphics tools to change image size, background, and color.
From the technical standpoint, only the simplest of HTML 3.2 constructs were used. There was no use of JavaScript or style sheets. Further, no Java was used, and certainly no XML.
There have been changes to the pages pointed to by the links below since 1997. Files have been relocated and renamed, and email addresses have changed. These links have been modified to reflect the current (or last known) values. Also, some editing of the source files has taken place to enhance comparison capability.
From the business standpoint, the biggest weakness was the lack of any provision for taking orders on-line. Customers were required to send an email with (hopefully) enough information to fulfill an order.
There were marketing weaknesses as well. While pricing and ordering constraints were provided by the client, options in presentation might have been considered to make the product more attractive to the consumer.
Discounting the changes listed above, the original pages are retained with their flaws. I keep this mini-site around to remind myself both that technology is constantly changing, and that the cure to ignorance is continued education.
Pages
Initial page | This was an extremely elementary first cut. The idea was to get a working concept - a point of reference for communication with the client. |
Interim version | This version supplied additional information desired by the client, corrected contact information, introduced a watermark background and provided meta data for potential web crawlers. |
Final version | After correcting the logo to the desired red, and providing a better background contrast, this final version was accepted as a baseline by the client. |
Current customer version | This is a local copy of the current page on the customer's site. |
