ASSISTANCE OFFICE AND SANDWICH LINE

Holy Ghost Church, since its founding, has been noted for its care of the poor and the homeless. Today it continues to help those in need through its Assistance Office.
One of the main functions of the Assistance Office is the Sandwich Line. The Holy Ghost Sandwich Line began in February 1975 with two volunteers making, packaging, and distributing 30 to 40 sandwiches per day. In spite of many obstacles, the Sandwich Line has been continuous.

Today, there are volunteer groups who come in to the church on specific days to make as many as 600 to 700 ham and cheese or bologna and cheese sandwiches. Their efforts are occasionally supplimented with contributions from other churches and civic groups. Sandwiches are made and distributed daily (except Sunday) from 10:00 to 10:30am. On an average day, 150 to 200 homeless people receive sandwiches.

The Assistance Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm. The office assists their clients in obtaining birth certificates, identification cards, shelter rent, medical prescriptions, gas vouchers, job assistance in the way of shoes and tools, eye glasses, and miscellaneous items. The office distributes hats, socks, and gloves in the afternoon to the clients.

Since December 1982, Holy Ghost Church has held the annual Christmas Party for the homeless. It is known as Father Woody’s Christmas Party. The homeless receive a hot meal and a gift. This takes approximately 400 volunteers. This year alone 2500 people were served a meal and received a gift.

The Assistance Office number is 303-297-3441. Any questions or inquiries for volunteer work should be made through this office.
